Mixing for Megan
The fruits of collaboration among talented people are likely to be very sweet. I was in L.A. when this record was born - a producer I was developing named Kadis sent me a drum sequence that I caught a vibe to. It was simple - just a kick, snare, and a percussion sample I had given him to play with. I added a conga loop and a simple repetitive synth line that you will hear in this clip. I sat on the track for several months until a very talented writer and vocalist named Erin Thompkins dusted it off when she caught a vibe…and weeks later the demo for this record was completed when she and Corey “Latif” Williams polished it off. That was over a year ago! Fast forward to now:
The voice that you hear as I eavesdrop on the mix session outside the door is that of Ray Romulus - an A&R at Def Jam who (along with another A&R named Memphitz) picked this joint especially for Megan Rochell - L.A. Reid’s newest female signing. It was a pleasure working with her…you can hear her near effortless vocal flexibility in this clip. Mixing this record with Pat Viala, who mixed Donell’s “Better Start Talking”, proves to be the icing on the cake.
