Self-Evaluation

I receive hundreds of music submissions daily. From time to time, I actually have the honor of meeting the young talented people who create the music. In this clip, I do my best to give this young producer some insight into the competitive nature of the music business by explaining the high standards expected of world-class producers:

This vid is meant to encourage all those who have the desire to formally join the NextSelection production team. To each of you I say this: strive for excellence, and make sure your music is competitive with the best of the best.

Ryan Leslie…the man of the year? lol..R Les keep on doing it. By the way, I think at this point you owe us an explanation on how you bypassed senior year and ended up attending harvard.

    RD

  2. Shogun:

Yo whattup RL? Me and my girl really feel your music man.. :)
I think it’s really dope you take the time to share your experiences with the world.. I’ll stay tuned..

  3. G:

yo ryan i just copped the latest remix magazine. I like to read them and gain insight in wha the big producers are using.. I like the fact that they call ur music progressive R&B. I feel like my music is becoming progressive also. I liked the combo of keyboards they said you had but you are probably a tweaker as i am not yet. I just wanted to know how long did it take you to get the hang of tweaking sounds and the basic hang of the A6…????

    G

  4. Romeo:

I kind of feel sorry for the guy…but he sounds like he has a “long way 2 go”!

  5. Chris:

    What’s up Ryan?
That was a very cool video
I am one of the producers that has the desire to join the Nextselection team… I’m still a beginner but you inspire me to work hard every day and to always keep the 4 Nextselection “Ds” in mind.
    Thank you,
    Chris

  6. Kelly T.:

    Dear ryan,

I greatly appreciate the advice given in the video. My brother & I feel the exact same way you do. It’s quite frankly ironic you have a video up such as this one that states that. As aspiring producers we feel your nextselection team is the perfect place for our music. We have recently submitted some to nextselection@gmail.com. We hope you like it.

    Thank you,
    Kelly

  7. That was not cool...:

It would have been okay if that guys beat had been played so we could make up our own minds.

Your speech sets a precedent that does not concur with Cassie’s weak voice, and live performances.

I used to watch this everyday, and feel disappointed at this latest blog.

If his beats were’nt good enough send him a letter dont put him on a video blog.

If he did agree to be filmed at least play his beat properly.

Is that what a young Ryan would have wanted?

  8. ralph:

    ez
ryan i dont quite understand the purpose of that video
i know you are lookin for elite production artists and you do have high standards but i dont understand how you expect to find the finished article straight away

that dude took some of his and your time to pitch you some beats. which we didnt get to hear???

i agree that you want you new blood to be hungry to become elite. but greatness isnt just aquired over nite its developed and nurtured. u must have heard in your path how talent isnt every thing. life is about hard work learning and development.

i wouldnt expect you to accept every applicant into your system as is life

i just hope you gave him somthing positive to work with and develop as a artist and a person

    bless

  9. Garbz:

    HEY EVERYONE,

    MY NAME IS GARBZ

THE GUY FROM THIS VIDEO BLOG

YOU CAN CHECK ME OUT ON

    AND HEAR WHAT RYAN HEARD.

WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR FEEDBACK.

THE WAY THE VIDEO WAS EDITED WAS CRAZY AND NOT A VALID REFLECTION OF OUR MEETING.

I MEAN, RYAN DOESN’T JUST MEET UP WITH ANYONE DOES HE?…….

THE FACT THAT HE MET ME IN THE FIRST PLACE WOULD INDICATE THAT MY MUSIC OF A CERTAIN LEVEL.

BUT LET ME KNOW WAHT YOU THINK…..AND I APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT

    GARBZ

  10. K:

WOW! Good point by Ralph and That was not cool…I dig Ryan Leslie’s music, but 2 make a comment like that and 2 put homeboy out there like that…NOT COOL…..I actually checked out his tunes on MYSPACE…He’s got some some hot remixes!! Homebody can play, he can put songs together. Cuz as we all know there’s some garbage on MYSPACE. He’s got something there. WOW!…I wonder if people actually hear whats coming out of their mouths……I DON’T think u should OPEN UR MOUTH, when ur OWN artist (CASSIE) has shown she has no talent. She’s ALL studio…well barely…4get LIVE performances. I don’t need 2 go on about her. The media and the general public have already eaten her and spit her out.

C’mon Ryan. I mean really. Check out Shiv there “we only have time for like…the best..”…THE BEST??!! LOL!!! R u kidding me.???…..LMAO!! Ur sayin that and u guys signed CASSIE 2 NEXT SELECTION??!! How she gonna have 18 million plays on MYSPACE and only sell 100,000. Ur online marketing is off….

Those other cats he’s co-signed, Mysto and Pizzi (hands down WORST names for producers) Those guys sound like Lil’ Jon and Scott Storch bitters. Remember people NS 4 LIFE has…”we only have time for like…the best..”…Again, I’m laughin’ at that comment…LOL!!

It’s funny 2 cuz we have not heard 1 peep from Ryan ’bout her. since she dropped her album….He’s tryin’ 2 put all the focus on himself now.

Next time back up ur comments and U BRING THE BEST!!

    Stop loving urself like Usher.

    Whatever…

  11. Jhon c:

wow! thats a deep… but honest commet k. I agree, Cassie cant sing a note live she just a puppet.
Putting that guy on blast..not cool at all!
Is fame getting to rles’s head???

  12. john doe:

wow ns4life? I think it should be changed to ”rles4life” cause ‘we only take the best of the best” this guy ”ryan leslie” is a character…..a puppet for puff that nobody will drop…he has is on problems about being signed and not dropping that he takes it out on everybody now that he has his one hit wonder cassie? no disrespect but I never heard of this guy until I heard of cassie….now I see why she’s on bad boy! ”rles” or whatever your name is one things for sure…..your not diddy

  13. JewUnit:

Cassie needs to bang out a sex tape and she’ll be fine.

  14. wow:

its sad but I agree with mr john doe he’s not diddy

  15. emma:

Ryan u need to come down to earth..u cant compete with dre, timberland they got super hits for years. u got cassie..who doesnt seem to be a real artist.

    anyway love ur music!

    all the best

  16. Ryan:

I knew that this clip would be a controversial one. Allow me to clarify a few misconceptions:

    * I was on my to a radio interview and only had time to listen to one joint. Shiv suggested that Garbz select his best representation, hence his comment: “we only have time for…the best”.

    * The response that I gave to Garbz illustrates my general wish to surround myself at NextSelection with like-minded individuals. People who believe, as I do, that there is always room for improvement. The producers I named: Dr. Dre, Scott Storch, Swizz Beats - they are all top players in the game. My wish is for every young musician to aspire to that level of accomplishment in their musical endeavors.

    * I took a serious tone of voice in this discussion because this business is a serious one. With millions of music profiles on myspace alone, it’s no secret that making a living in entertainment is a an elusive goal that’s in high demand. Garbz represents a handful of talented young individuals that have the persistence to secure meetings with those that they feel can advance them to success. In no way did I close the door in his face. In fact, I painted a realistic picture of the competitive landscape that I navigate everyday. The picture is ugly, and therefore, I do not expect a positive response to it…

    * The few that respond positively to that ugly picture by working harder and continuing to believe in themselves despite the criticism of others are my heroes. Cassie is one of those people.

    * Garbz continues to have an open line of communication with me and my staff should he consider himself among those few.

    God bless.

  17. emma:

    good stuff.

  18. Aitch:

Ryan: You obviously were in the debate team. However I think the main points people want clarifying are:

*If Cassie and Mysto & Pizzi et al are NS material because they understand that there is room for improvement, how does Garb differ?

*This video blog took time to edit, and a more objective presentation would be preferable. Exempli Gratia: Playing his song properly, like you do yours at the end of your videoblogs.

*However, if you Garb gave the impression that he was just trying to ‘get on’ or did not think he needed to improve, showing this would have showed you in a positive light.

On reflection I am under the impression that you are aware of the power of controversy and that having people talk about you is good for publicity.

Some of you may recognise me from my Robin Thicke ‘Wanna Love You Girl’ Remix on Youtube and Myspace.

I am launching a record label that promotes using the full potential of the web, and distributes digitally worldwide through iTunes etc.

If you make beats/sing/write etc. Contact me. It will be a good opportunity for you to get heard and have some visibility.

    The Digital Revolution has begun…

  19. Ryan:

Aitch, let me address your concerns as well:

“If Cassie and Mysto & Pizzi et al are NS material because they understand that there is room for improvement, how does Garb differ?”

    * I believe everyone who works hard and strives for the best is NS material. Garbz is no different - that’s why I took the meeting. I did not turn him down in any way and he continues to have a line of communication with us. Nevertheless, his geographic location (across the Atlantic) makes it challenging to remotely nurture the NextSelection musical aesthetic as I am able to do with my New York based talent pool.

“This video blog took time to edit, and a more objective presentation would be preferable. Exempli Gratia: Playing his song properly, like you do yours at the end of your videoblogs.”

    * This clip is not a “please give your opinion of Garbz” post. His myspace is the perfect place for you to offer your opinion of his music and send your encouragement. Therefore, I chose to represent the moment as I experienced it - playing the music through a laptop.

“if Garb gave the impression that he was just trying to ‘get on’ or did not think he needed to improve, showing this would have showed you in a positive light.”

    * I am not interested in shining a “positive light” on myself for purposes of this blog. I am interested in sharing those points that I made so that the readers/viewers can see the reality of this industry thru my lens.

All the best to you in your venture.

    God bless

  20. Aitch:

Thanks for the reply, and taking the time to clear up any mis-understandings.

I appreciate it, as I can imagine how valuable your time is.

All the best to you too.

    Peace

  21. Garbz:

In response to all the comments that have been made……

I am not here to start a slander campaign or hate trail, I would never want to add to Next Selection’s problems.

First of all I would like to say that I appreciate the overwhelming response both on here and on myspace.

There are many issues I would like to address.

First, in terms of people advocating for Next Selection, there was not a bigger one than me. My remix of Cassie, Me & U has been one of the most successful…….
It was featured on DJ White Owl’s R&B Part 26 and credited to be the Me & U Remix PT. 1.
DJ White Owl claims to not know where he got the remix from, however there seems to be a strong Next Selection link on all his R&B mixtapes.

    www.myspace.com.djwhiteowl (under pictures)

My remix has also been featured on all of Cassie fan websites and is even credited as a Ryan Leslie Remix on one.

When R-Les released his official remix, PJButta put them head to head on his butta bootlegs to much success on both accounts.

    http://pjbutta.com/content/music/share/?source=MusicShareBootlegs&page=8

As an unsigned producer (from across the atlantic) I have managed to get this remix played on various radio stations and nightclubs across the U.S.

I am just trying to give you an insight into where I was coming from regarding my journey with Next Selection.

I had secured a meeting with Ryan whilst he was in the States from April and consequently met him in mid July (why this is just surfacing now is beyond me)

So as you can imagine, I began working on tracks for his review immediately for numerous hours a day once I had finished my University exams in May.

As a producer I felt it was a grave injustice to subsequently have less than 30 seconds of a few songs to played on a laptop.

It seemed as if my fate was sealed before we had even met up……

Now for this to surface on the internet 2 months after we met was something that I thought was deeply wrong.

It was brought to my attention by one of the numerous people I had introduced to Next Selection.

I received an email in myspace inbox from Brandon, a Next Selection ‘Exec’ asking for my permission for the video to be used after I had seen it on the blog.

I may not be Scott Storch, Swizz Beatz or even Dre, but I am Garbz and genuinely believe that there is space for me in today’s music industry, as do many other industry exec’s that I am currently liaising with.

So with regards to the open line that admittedly Ryan did inform me of, I may well utilise that when I relocate to NY this month to fulfill a presitigious internship that I did manage to secure this month.

After all is considered, the Next Selection response would in my opinion indicate that they understand that posting a video like this was detrimental to their image, as never has Ryan twice responded on any given blog, and also never has a blog succeeded its predecessor within 24 hours.

Nevertheless I am honoured to have caused so much controversy, so I must be doing something right.

Keep your ears open and eyes peeled for a number of tracks that I have recently placed with major aritsts coming to a radio station near you real soon.

    Regards,

    Garbz

Thanks for adding me to your friends list Garbz…

    U.K!

    Did I mention www.myspace.com/bathingaitch
    Youtube: type: Habib Anibaba

    Lol.

  23. eric sanicola:

hey garbz, dont feel too bad! at my meeting with ryan, he was too busy to even listen to one track! he sent me to play em for another A&R for bad boy, who i haven’t heard a word from! and i KNOW my shit is up to par—but this kinda thing is VERY common in the industry, –often, even when somebody thinks your music is HOT, nothing will come of it (at least right away)— its all good though—— ironically u gotta use ryans advice in these kinda situations–beieve in urself, and stay motivated and determined…cuz without that u dont have a prayer

  24. Ikes:

    GREETINGS ALL..

MY NAME IS IKES (WWW.MYSPACE.COM/1IKES), I’M A HIP HOP/RAP ARTIST/SONG WRITER. MY RELEVANCE TO THIS BLOG IS THAT I’M A GOOD FRIEND OF GARBZ AND WAS MUCH INVOLVED IN THE BACKGROUND ON HIS VENTURE TO MEET RYAN.

NOW BEFORE I SHARE MY OPINIONS I JUST WANT TO STATE THAT MY INTENTIONS ARE NOT TO TARNISH NS4LIFE’S NAME IN ANYWAY OR TO ADD TO BAD PUBLICITY FOR THEM, I JUST WANNA CLEAR THINGS UP A BIT AS FROM READING ALL THE COMMENTS MADE, SOMEONE DEFINATELY HAS TO…

NOW, THE VIDEO SHOWS PART OF A MEETING HELD BETWEEN GARBZ AND RYAN (SHIV AND BRANDON WERE ALSO PRESENT). FIRSTLY, I HAVE TO QUESTION HOW ONE CAN REALLY JUDGE THE FULL POTENTIAL OF A “PRODUCER” BY LISTENING TO SNIPPETS OF MATERIAL THROUGH “LAPTOP SPEAKERS” I WAS ON THE PHONE TO GARBZ WHEN HE LEFT OUR ACCOMODATION IN THE MORNING TO MEET RYAN, HOWEVER I FELT THAT HE WAS PUT ON A WILD GOOSE CHASE AND DID NOT SEE RYAN TILL AROUND 10PM. IS THIS HOW ONE LOOKING FOR THE BEST WOULD TREAT A “REPRESENTATION OF A HANDFUL OF TALENTED YOUNG PRODUCERS”???? I THINK NOT…

THE CD GARBZ PRESENTED THAT DAY CONSISTED OF REMIXES, INSTRUMENTALS AND SONGS THAT WERE ALL PRODUCED BY GARBZ HOWEVER A SMALL FEW WERE WRITTEN BY MYSELF. WE ALSO CO-WROTE A COUPLE. THE CD WAS WORKED ON FOR AROUND TWO MONTHS WHERE HALF THE TRACKS COMPLETED DID NOT MAKE THE FINAL CD BUT WOULD MAKE THE BILLBOARD TOP 10 IF PLACED. I HAVE NOT SEEN GARBZ WORK SO HARD ON ANYTHING IN MY LIFE..

WHEN SHIV ASKED GARBZ FOR THE BEST, I KNOW THAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN HARD FOR HIM TO SELECT ONE TRACK OVER THE OTHERS… WHAT HE MAY SEE AS HIS FAVOURITE MAY NOT HAVE BEEN RYAN’S. THIS IS THE REASON WHY DEMO CD’S CONSIST OF MORE THAN ONE TRACK, TO SHOW VERSATILITY..

I’M NOT TRYNA SOUND BITTER IN ANYWAY BUT I DO FEEL DISRESPECTED BY THE NATURE AND THE LIGHT IN WHICH THE VIDEO HAS BEEN SHOWN.. THE VIDEO WAS ANGLED IN A WAY TO SUGGEST THAT GARBZ HAD FAILED. THIS IS NOT THE CASE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM. I DON’T KNOW WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE EDITING OF THIS BLOG, BUT IT SEEMS THAT RYAN’S RESPONSES DOES NOT CORRESPOND TO THE CONTENT OF THE VIDEO, I MEAN, DID THE WAY GARBZ WAS SHOWN LEAVING THE BUILDING REALLY LOOK AS IF HE HAS A LINE OF COMMUNICATION WITH NS????

I AM GLAD TO LET YOU KNOW THAT GARBZ DID TAKE THE POSITIVES FROM THE MEETING AND DIDN’T LET THE NEGATIVES EFFECT HIM IN ANY WAY… HE IS CURRENTLY ON THE ROAD TO WORKING WITH VERY BIG ARTISTS IN THE NEAR FUTURE SO IF YOU KNOW WHAT’S GOOD FOR YOUR EARS, WATCH THIS SPACE!!!!

    NS4LIFE BABY!!!!

  25. Brandon the Great:

All of you idiots, shut up. There was no negative aspect AT ALL from this meeting. We were completely honest with Garbz in telling him that his beats are NOT up to par yet. Just to sit down and get criticism like that from ANY producer with a #1 song is a blessing.

It seems like you didn’t appreciate it, and for you to come here and complain shows your temperament. Whether the track is on laptop speakers or not, when something is hot - you can tell. Stop finding faults and lock yourself in your room until your tracks sound better.

  26. Yamill:

I agree, I didn’t see any negative aspects in this meeting at all. It is a serious business. Ryan was showing the real picture of the Music Business and expectation’s that Label’s expect when you submit a record with the other competition in the game.

  27. Garbz:

    @ Brandon

‘LISTEN YOU IDIOTS’ - FUNNY HOW YOU WEREN’T SAYING THAT WHEN YOU WERE IN LONDON!

    1) No one asked you to post this blog up. If this were to come up it should have been posted up around the time of ‘Kabaret’ or ‘Real Love’.
So in my opinion it was an obvious attempt to drum up attention around Next Selection.

2)Your beats are no better than mine, I make good music and understand and recognise for me to grow to the level of greatness I want to reach, my talents and abilities have to be nurtured by great people, or didn’t you complete an internship before officially becoming Next Selection staff?

3)I don’t want to state the obvious but Cassie is not #1 anymore.

4)I obviously did appreciate the meeting I had with him, because until this blog came up I had done nothing to bring attention to it, I even put the picture up of when we met a couple of days before that meeting on my page. However, the light in which Next Selection have shown me in on this blog is something that is simply unforgivable.
I didnt let the meeting get me down, and was not even bitter, instead I took it as part of a learning curve. As all the greatest producers have been ‘rejected’ before even though Ryan says that is not what he did.

5)Anyone with common sense can tell you, that you can’t ‘audition’ a producers work through a laptop.

6)Next Selection seems to be full of contradiction

How can Ryan write I am no different to Cassie and M&P but geographically it is impossible

Now you are saying my beats are not up to par?

You really need to evaluate your attitude Brandon, just because the people on myspace are creaming your ass does’t mean I am going to. You claim to be an a&r, but are yet to make a hit signing.

I didn’t start this, Next Selection did.

    @ Ryan

I think you really need to teach your staff the power of public relations, as throwing abuse at people over your page and myspace is not good for Next Selection.

    Good day to you all.

    Garbz

  28. Ikes:

Yo Ryan, I think you need to take that big baby Brandon back to kindergarten, he obviously isn’t mature enough to discuss real issues in a respectable way. You know what? Imma address this directly at you Brandon: YOU ARE THE COMPLETE IDIOT!! In fact, you’re more than an idiot. Just tell me whom exactly you think you are talking to? So anyone who has any negative but constructive criticism on ns is an idiot?? You are a complete internet gangster I mean, I’ve been watching you put people down on your myspace blog for months but when you came to London and I saw your very vunerable babyface, I felt sorry for you… Your arrogance is unbelievable so you need to lock yourself in your room till you grow up a bit.. And yeah one last thing, your beats really ain’t all that nice..

  29. Brandon the Great:

lmao, This is exactly why I don’t respond to clingy, horrible, producers like yourselves. Cause you get a few minutes (or seconds in your case) of recognition and get huge heads.

Ikes, after that reply I really believe that you two shower together. Are you REALLY gonna tag-team on a blog? Is that REALLY what you guys do for a living (besides make horrendous beats)? Your life is miniscule and has no relevance to me, therefore I sit back in my executive leather chair and laugh at you baboons while I virtually abuse you.

My MySpace blogs are more informational than hurtful, the ones that talk about pitiful beatmakers are to people like you who beg for handouts. Here’s an idea: Why don’t you two do your ritual bathe and play russian roulette simultaneously?

    Reply when you’re done :-)

  30. Garbz:

That response just sums up what you/next selection are about and how far you will go.

    Good Day

    Garbz

  31. Brandon the Great:

I guess that means you won the russian roulette.

This will be my last reply/look at these comments.

    Take care now. :-)

  32. Aitch:

I just wanna see who you put out after Cassie. I remember I used to tell model chicks that I would produce an album for them if they gave me their number, but I never actually did it because they couldnt sing to the right standard.

Im learning alot from NS but its not all good.

Even your most idiotic fans are fooled by the way you quickly posted that pathetically contrived, over edited blog ‘Give it all you got’.

Who is this Brandon dude? I know why I have got time to internet beef with people, but I thought that NS staff would be too busy.

It shows how one mistake can change the loyalty of fans, because I was a fan and now I dont want anything to do with you clowns.

You had so much potential to be great, but then you had to sign a model who cant sing or perform, and now you have sullied what used to be a great blog.

Thank you Brandon for teaching me to ignore people who you consider to be haters. Thank you Ryan for teaching me to never actually put a model chick in a studio, and never to make over edited video blogs that dont portray the truth.

Thanks for the free publicity, because y’all know this is gonna get in the media right.

    www.myspace.com/bathingaitch

But most of all thanks for introducing me to Garbz talent.

    To conclude:

Cassie sucks, Brandon sucks. Ryans alright he just made some errors. Signing Cassie, Making that video, Letting Brandon post, Engineering Video Blogs. The dude is still talented and driven though which I respect.

  33. Giel Werner:

Brandon right on the fact the video isn’t negative it’s just the way this business is. It’s a hard business and if you don’t like it go somewhere else. Thanks Brandon and Ryan! You’re a great influence

  34. Amy:

wow true colours are showing from the ns4life team! Brandon i read ur a a&r who u signed lately? ur just a kid taggin along with ryan trying to be cool…Thats not cool man!

Anyway im not here to give abuse. But i got to show love to Garbz and any other producer out there trying to make it.

    ryan love ur songs.

  35. Odin o & Rodney:

QUOTE: Is that REALLY what you guys do for a living (besides make horrendous beats)? Your life is miniscule and has no relevance to me, therefore I sit back in my executive leather chair and laugh at you baboons while I virtually abuse you.

If you are the “real” Brandon that u claim to be you seriously put NS in a bad daylight here..
And i just can’t see the use of that!!
I think that Ryan should seriously put you on your place cause u just “not all that”
Why not treat people with respect? That’s the only way to get recpected..

  36. Giel Werner:

Quote: Why not treat people with respect that’s the only to get respected.

I agree with that. I think brandon was right on the point that the video wasn’t really negative and it shows how it happens. Although he doesn’t said it the way it should be. Garbz is just like Ryan said a talented young producer. And Brandon shouldn’t have said it this way. Because this isn’t that good for ns

  37. meena:

ryan, is this how your executives respond to criticism? brandon’s comments are completely disrespectful and fail to reflect the professionalism of NS.

  38. Alan:

Thats not-pro from this brandon dude.
This just relects on ns4. RLes needs to check on his team.

    All the best

  39. K10:

    Ryan,

If this really is Brandon, which I find probable considering much of the stuff on his myspace is just as pathetic and immature as this, I just have to say:

In order to build a serious music label you say yourself you have to pick the best, #1…

How can a spoiled brat like Brandon be #1? He’s an alright musician, but something you should consider when signing or hiring people to work with your brand is the level of professionalism they maintain.

You come on here trying to repair the damage done by the video, and he makes matters even worse.

  40. TropSic:

This blog more than others has shed light on NS4 Life, but in the end, the quibbling’s over and what NS4 Life stands for is the passion of making music. Ryan’s bio — graduating early from Harvard, grunting it out in the city, getting noticed by Diddy, proving his worth — about the hard work. He’s still young, and to rag on him/his team for the sake of ragging doesn’t get anywhere, even if it makes for fun blog reading.

My passion is the creation of music because I believe in music more than just something to make money out of. I write hip hop beats because I really think hip hop music has something to offer other than crunk and juice. My background is as a touring pro pianist, violinist, then got into writing music for film, tv, and live acts. Over the past few years, I got into writing hip hop beacuse I noticed that beats started to get generic. Not necessarily dissing anyone’s sound/efforts, but there’s a need to create something fresh. Miri Ben Ari, the hip hop violinist, is a notable influence. not in her music necessarily, but in her statements about making qualtiy music, and bringing that back to the top.
Legends: Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, Rick Rubin.

No one’s to blame for generic product, but everyone’s to blame at the same time. Look at our culture hellbent on capitalism. this can go on for hours. What this business should be about is the quality of music and NS4 represents that, maybe not singularly on a univesral level, but is at least a branch of that tree. I’ve got my views on the genius of why Cassie’s “Me and U” is hot. Yes, not the greatest singer, but neither was Ciara. Simple, clean, groovy, and the sound is haunting, in a hypnotic way. Fresh, to sum it up in a word.

Why I respect Leslie: a true eye for music and thirst for talent. he’s expected the best all his life, went to the best institutions. I have a similar inkling and background– but I’m still developing my voice and craft, and I can only expect the highest standard possible out of myself.

I just got on the myspace bug, if you want to check out some beats that infuse soulful violining in the goal to make “fresh”, go to:
    www.myspace.com/jshinmusic

Garbz, I like your music and I think you’ve def got something good goin on. I’m in NY , hit me up via myspace if you wanna collab heads or if you have ideas for violin.

  41. Kai:

    TropSic,

Having a similar “inkling and background” - in fact I went to the same institution as Ryan and witnessed some of his first performances (at Lowell Lecture Hall, remember Ryan!) - does not mean walking around with blinders.

Ryan is a true talent and an inspiration. I am proud of him and will continue to watch him. However, the actions of his executive were unforgiveable. While Brandon’s comments aren’t necessarily Ryan’s fault, it is Ryan’s responsibility to project the best image of NS possible. And Brandon is clearly out of keeping with that image.

NS would do well to do some self-evaluation of its own and assess what people affiliated with it (whether they be executives, producers, artists, etc) compromise its objectives.

  42. Tyree D.:

Just here promoting myself. But I do remember when Brandon called himself Fro$tytheGreat of Be Humble Beats.

  44. solomon:

i feel that everyone has a point (even brandon).
However, the only thing i feel was wrong was the amount of editing in the video it just made me feel like ” what was the point” although ryan’s message was the importance of being of being objective i still felt like there could have been more in the video.

  45. bob:

    @Brandon the Great:
Cause you get a few minutes of recognition and get huge heads.

wow look whos talking. last time i checked before you got famous (when u were on fp) you called yourslef Be Humble smh.
anyways even though i feel that Garbz was shown in a bad light in the video it seems that RLes has cleared up the problems that came from this video. BTW brandon seriously you need to shut up because you’re ego is huge and you have done anything last time i checked.

  46. KG:

It’s Ryan’s company. If you don’t like how its being managed, send your demo to Dre, Pharrell or Scott Storch - surely their looking for new producers. Just the other day, Dre provided knowledgable information on how to be added to his staff… Keep up the good work Ryan. NS4LIFE!

  53. j.troup:

    Garbz…What’s good?

I’m gonna cut to the chase. R.Les wasn’t being funny. He was being real. The industry is not a nice place. It’s a real place, with real opinions, and people don’t have time to sugar coat things.

I’m gonna give you my opinions on the tracks. You’re a good player. Sounds like you can play the piano, and that’s good. But those tracks on your page weren’t so much “produced” as you just added “instrumental accompanyment”, if you get what I’m saying.

The tracks were lacking melodies, and structure, really. They were far from up to the standard that Ryan Leslie has set for his company, and far from being able to compete with current tracks in the industry. That’s not hating, that’s just a real assessment of your music, from someone that’s been in your position. And that’s all Ryan Leslie was doing.

Garbz…we’ve all thought our music was ready for the big time, at every single point in our production growth. I remember when I had just started, like maybe 4-5 months after that, i thought I was ready. I was doing tracks like YEAH, this is gonna be my jump off right here, I’m ready, cuz my tracks are as good as people already out there…

And you know what?? In hindsight I was DEAD WRONG. DEAD ASS WRONG. If I had taken those beats to anyone, I woulda gotten laughed, ridiculed and rejected. I know that now…because I know more. I’ve learned more. I’ve grown as a producer and actually STUDIED THE CRAFT.

Ryan was talking about self-assesment. All of us need to do it at every single point in our evolution. BE REAL WITH YOURSELF. Cuz usually, if you’re real with yourself, you’ll see that you have alot to learn. ESPECIALLY at the beginning.

Good brotha…You’re 19. I was the same way at 19. Thought I was ready for the WORLD. But you have alot of growing and learning yet to go…In music and in life. That’s not disrespect at all, but more of a glimpse of things to come. With maturity comes wisdom and insight. You’ll see, in time.

You’re good, don’t get me wrong. But Ryan Leslie is looking for a certain thing. He’s looking to cater to the current sound that’s out there now. And the tracks on your page are not it. Yes, it’s very musical, but it’s not very MARKETABLE in today’s music landscape.

Don’t hate what Ryan Leslie said. We’ve all gotten told our stuff wasn’t “good enough” before. When we just KNEW it was the SH*T!!!! And it hurts. It hurts BAD. Especially coming from someone who’s as big as Ryan Leslie is right now. We’re artists, and we’re sensitive about our sh*t.

But take that critique he gave you, and really look inside yourself and your music. Take that and disect your tracks and your approach to making music with a fine toothed comb. Assess your weaknesses and look to make them stronger.

Then you’ll look back and realize that this chance meeting with Ryan Leslie was the greatest thing that could have happened to you.

Be hurt, be mad, but then realize the value in what Les said, and use it to become better at your craft.

    Best of luck.

  54. shiv:

Thank you J.Troup! You really understood what Ryan was saying, and why it was important to put this clip up.

  55. TJfromLP:

Wassup! Garbz, eb easy homie. Ryan just giving insight on what the industry is like and what his team is looking for. I respected what Ryan Leslie said, it was true. But, i think the process of your interview could’ve of been better than that. Although you got a chance, it’s not like NS4LIFE is the So SO Def or Aftermath too.

But, it was real. But on the other hand, FRO$TYtheGREAT? What happened to BE HUMBLE! SMH at all that. FP will remember you (yes, that site u may call small). The professionalism of NS4LIFE has just gone down from this (you may call USELESS BLOG). But, this is a channel to teh fans from u dudes. Last, Mysto and Pizzi sound GOOD, Cassie is what the music industry is now,e nough said. PEACE!!

  56. RoyaltyClub:

yo Ryan we need more Mysto & Pizzi Vidz….and this video is jus to show how NOT easy the industry is..i dont think it was used to thrash Garbz…say what…we all go tour own opinions and views

i think u handled that well ..nowadays there are so many in the music industry that would’ve just crushed that guys dreams by tellin him u suck or that is wack or something like that..i liked your approach better and i think that all aspirin producers such as myself and others should wanna reach that level of timbo..pharrell, dre and etc..

  58. G:

I aint feelin how my man brandon responded to all the critiques but i think ryan was professional. At least he got a meaning and crazy exposure from all this . Hey guys if u are scheduling meetings im open for 11 am brunch on saturday.

  60. Jaynae:

i agree there was nothing wrong about the video,Rles was being honest on what he was looking for and what he expected BUT the comments that Brandon made was outta of hand..i rememeber you from FP and your be humble music page(i was under a diff nameon FP) we were trying to be heard just like you,and just cause your rolling with Rles, doesnt mean you have the right to down talk ppl,who strive and work REAL hard to get to that top level. I understand your trying to be honest but there is a Professional way to go about it and that wasnt it.

  61. jay2k:

brandon dude needs to go. f***king ns4life movement. Alot pps i know is talking about this stuff on other sites.

    Gabrz do u thing brother.

  62. Dave:

what other sites are talking about this??

  63. Kdizzle:

The video was honest. Anytime you CAN get a moment with someone in the a position as Ryan is in, and 30 seconds is all you get, APPRECIATE IT!!

The first 10 seconds of your track, HONESTLY when having it heard by either Major’s or ppl who can make the decisions, is when they make up their mind.

What he’s looking for is the Next Best Thing. You know a hot track the moment it hits your ears.
Garbs, I checked out your music, and it’s really good. Every producer goes through stages in their music as we progress. Ryan just felt that you may need a little more time to progress to where he would like you to be.

Thank you for being real R.Les.

SHIT MAN, WHATEVER IT TAKES , ILL BE THE WATERBOY AND THE VIDEO SHOOT, CONCERT, PHOTO SHOOT, MEETINGS, ILL BRING YOUR BEVERAGE, FOOD, PAPERS MAIL, ILL TAKE OUT THE TRASH. PUT ME AT THE BOTTOM AND LET ME WORK TO THE TOP. NO HAND OUTS!

LMAO. tru dat tru dat rafael

  66. Yamill:

I think there were many disrespectful comments made here on this page to begin with, not cool. The NS4LIFE Blog was made for fans/aspiring artists who enjoy and learn from these videos, not for bashers.

I guess there are just some people just don’t appreciate the hours Ryan & The Team put into recording/editing these videos for you guys & gives the chance to see the truth behind-the-scenes and advice Ryan brings from time to time. & Just like any of the other videos this was edited to state the main points, it’s just some take this video the wrong way because it is a serious meeting, just like the business is.

Laptop Speakers & Loud Speakers makes no difference in music evaluation. Don’t you hear your hit records on your laptop or on your iPod? You can definately tell when you hear one.

  67. Senica Aka Tha Misfit:

Yall please stop playing and get at me, I need a team and you guys or looking real good at nextselection, I believe I should be your next selection in the emcee field, just go to www.myspace.com/senicaakamisfit…the comments and numbers speak for themselves. Thanks

  68. Buttafly G.:

I totally understand what you are trying to build, but I don’t understand the point you were trying to make when you told that producer that you weren’t trying to build NS off of producers and artists. I don’t get it? What exactly are you looking for once you’ve found a hit producer/artist/composer what do you plan to do with a that person once you’ve made your decision to keep them for NS? I guess he didn’t stand out to go against the big boys but as far as artists, producers, and/or composers what does Ns actually need? You’re an artist yourself and you need some light as an artist yourself what exactly are your goals Ryan?

  69. Buttafly G.:

    Forget the negative comments Ryan!
I know the music industry it’s full of NEGATIVE and POSITIVE. You just have to figure which is which sometimes. All I’m reading is blah blah blah…Garbs…
I’d rather hear you talk about Next selection. I’d rather hear you talk about your experiences this is YOUR BLOG. You say what you want.

I’VE SEEN WORSE from INDIE LABELS. They will tell you that you sound like some shit nicely. I thought it was a sweet way to tell him that he wasn’t good enough!
So the fuck what! Can I say that…
You’re not going to turn into a bitch and have a whack producer on your label because we’re “watching you”. All I want to hear about is your main goal for NS whats done is done. Talk about the VMA’s. Let’s get some more insight on self-evaluation. My eyes are hurting reading about Garbs who is he? I don’t care you can put another blog on here just like this one I could care less what people say if this was my blog I’d let them talk and then I’d put another one just like it and let them talk some more I’d eat it up..Hey they comment don’t they?

  70. James:

not feelin the ns4life movement no more just a big hype to make ryan look good and upcoming artist look poor!

  71. Buttafly G.:

Hey Ryan I wish that I could connect with you without all the distractions. Buts thats just how it is.
You’re showing us that in this business you will get doors slammed in your face I’ve had them shut a million times and contracts that were totally bogus!!! I just wanna make enough money to build a studio so that I won’t need to kiss someones ass or be on someones elses time limit in the studio that really sucks!!! I would like to talk about something else I just don’t want everyone else to read what I want to say dammit!!!!

  72. Buttafly G.:

    How old are you R-LES?

  73. Robert Commings:

hey R.Les my name is Rob C. i am on myspace as Rob C. and iam an up and coming R&B singer & songwriter me and my partners started our company Superstar music group (SMG) which consist of songwriters, producers, rappers we feel as though we are just what Nextselection is looking for right now we are working on a SMG portfolio that will have all of our projects. Can i have a direct address to send it to?

  74. Tristan Dion:

I think Garbz is a tight producer. His music is really good. But it sounds more like “quality music”, its not the typical Commercial song. Thats the only thing that I have to agree with Ryan Leslie about as well as the industry is cut throat. I think Cassie is fine as hell, shes an ok singer but so is Britney Spears and Jlo. She was just given a chance, I like Ryan Leslie as a producer since I heard his work with New Edition. In regards to Brandon, wtf. Bro you’re treating everyone on this like u run shit. Remember that pride comes before fall. Humble yourself and dont treat people like shit cause it will come back to hurt you. The way I look at it is that Myspace helped Next Selection and it could also hurt Next Selection. It is true a Demo should be listened to on speakers and not a laptop. But who am I, thats just my opinion. I think Garbz could make lots of money producing, listen to the Underdogs the produce “real music”. Come on most of these producers Ryan mentioned wont be around for the long run. Dre is good but Swizz Beat samples. Come on any one can make a Swizz beat track, just give me an MPC and a sample. But at the end of the day its sad but true, its a Business. Its about selling records and not about talent. Puffy, Diddy, or whatever hes calling himself nowadays said that “not because uve sold millions of records means u have a hot track’. tI think Cassie is fine as hell, shes an ok singer but so is Britney Spears and Jlo. She was just given a chance, I like Ryan Leslie as a producer since I heard his work with New Edition. That stuck in the back of my mind. Ryan Leslie is a good produer and one of my favorites along with Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. Cassie has good production, songs but shes not a singer. She can carry a tune but u probably wont see her singing a Whitney Houston, Celine Dion or Patti Labelle duet anytime soon, lol. But I respect her drive and determination. Last words, I think Garbz has enough talent to make it on his own, with God’s help, you’d be ok bro.

I know the lack of respect that’s being delivered on this blog won’t halt your desire to help and teach others. That is what some of the people responding here have missed entirely. Teaching and giving back is what you do.

The music industry is by far the harshest industry EVER, and that’s including fair-weather fans!!!

  79. mybday:

Cassie is not a verry good singer or performer. The public should be aware of that. ryan is talented but cant judge others when his own artist aint great.

hey guys check out my girl group there next single is gonna be produced by me . Im so excited also check out my page more new songs coming up . and im gonna start a video blog tooo and get my sunglasses @ night on too.. holla

stay tuned for my escapades in this crazy music biz……

    whizkid

  81. Van Go:

    Check out the page.

  82. foj:

Ryan, you should think of how you want to slotted in the hiphop industry. i think you guys should focus on beats from time to time. i love how you draw on many elements from electronic styles but it still feels like your production lacks occasionally

  83. Frank:

    Ryan,
Keep doing your thing! It is hard to tell the truth . I think
the average music fan can recognize what great music sounds like. Its that instantaneous vibe one gets or feels when one is driving in their car and hears a great beat for the first time and immediately connects with it on some emotional level. Mr.Leslie as a creator of great music only you can be able to seperate the pretenders from the contenders because you are seeing and hearing things from a higher level. Keep up the GREAT WORK!!!

  84. badboy:

cassie is a flop she cant perform just studio artist. she good for one thing ;) and im sure diddy hit that up

  85. Touchnplay:

I Think Ryan was just telling it like it is.
To get to the top you got to be the best of the best.
Personally I dont think Ryan was being over negative to garbs.
This is what you call constructive critism. Therefore it should be taken as a blessing since most of us are not lucky enough to recieve advice from the top.
I feel Im destined for success however I know that Im not quite at the point I need to be as far as my music goes.
    So what do I do…………
I keep on learning and improving and I will never give up until my goals are realised. Thanks for the Insight Ryan and Garbzs keep doing your thing because you got talent.
Alot of people have commented on Brandons arrogance and Whilst I do agree that he is a cocky devil this is more than likely the same confidence and self belief that got him where he is so its all good. However I do feel that he should understand just how lucky he has been…..Right time , Right place ect.
Anyway good luck to all the aspiring artists out there and if a few negative comments are going to put you off you dreams then you probally never wanted it enough in the first place.

  86. RUDEY:

I return to find world war III about kick off.
    Here’s my 5 pence worth:-

    Was the video presentation fair?
Yes is was , edited badly but fair.

    Was Garbz treated fairly:
Garbs was there so only he knows

    Was that REALLY Brandon:
I really dont think so but SH!T HAPPENS.

Funny thing is people have an opinion on this Heavily editted video clip. HEAVILY EDITTED . Garbz seems to have moved on and regardless of what was really said in that mysterious meeting Garbz still believes in his product. I’ve heard it, I like it.

Why is cassie getting slated so much . She is determined. She was chosen for a reason. She can carry a tune and looks damn good. She is perfect for todays music machine. Why dya think there is a whole music video industry?. There are women in the business right now making a shed load of money selling pap to the masses with half the talent. At the same time are super talented unknowns waiting tables elsewhere making £3.50ph. The music business is not neccessariy a talent meritocracy but for who can work the hardest at a goal that is with their reach. Don’t believe me ?
Take a look at American Idol . and X factor in the UK . Controversial ejections from the competitions every season. People thrown out even yet survived by lesser singers.
The bottom line is that Cassie is experiencing something many of us will never simply because we dont want it enough, dont look right, can’t sing right, ME&U STILL pops crowds at my night club and Just One Night is hot on my radio show.

I contunue to back and support *ns and all its components and wish them all future success.

GARBZ. you’re hot now and you’re gonna BE ON FIRE keep at it (and send me some stuff)..ANY PUBLICITY IS GOOOOOOD.

    be cool people

    Peace
    Rudey

  87. Mark Rytch:

Hey…I’m a very big Ryan Leslie fan ever since I found out he produced Cheri Dennis’ “I Love You.” I think that Ryan is extremely talented and has exemplified what hard work and persistence are all about.

I also think that in taking the time out to post these blogs he has shown that he wants to help and inspire others who are want to get to where he is and beyond. I think the blog could have been edited a bit differently, but if it was, a lot of people would probably get the wrong idea of what this business is like.

So, I think that in order to get the point across that “it’s no walk in the park” and that we all (if we are really serious about breaking in to this industry) need to evaluate ourselves truthfully and continuously.

Had the blog been edited differently, alot of us would think all we need to do is send in a cd and we can get down…because a lot of feel that we are there, when we are not.

At the beginning of this summer I entered a few beat battles on RocBattle.com (RockWilder’s beat battle site) and not too long after I was ranked #16 out of more than 4,000 up coming producers worldwide (currently I am in the top 200 of 8,000). I even beat the guy who would go on to be Grand Champion (THE PRESIDENTZ)….Alot of people would take that and say “I’m Ready”

Not me…and that’s why I understand why the blog was shown this way and that’s why i understand Ryan’s response. There is always room for improvement and Ryan wanted us not to be discouraged but to be inspired to not only be “up to par” but set a new standard to truly be best of the best.

    Mark Rytch

  88. dannymorenito:

i have to agree with some of the guys here. I like Garbz as a producer and instrumentalists. However, I noticed that u have alot of Gospel influence in ur music. Gospel music is mostly about music and not the beat, secular music is more beat driven. I think u can do both Gospel and secular pop/hip hop, etc. Look at Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, hes good as hell at both secular and gospel music. Stay encourage and learn from this experience and stay motivated.

    God Bless

  89. G:

Hey ryan check out my music sometime when you get a chance… new page new music…

  90. Angelicious:

If that was Brandon, he is a 1st class pr*ck. How childish!

For someone that’s supposed ot be professional, that was really poor. Maybe he’s still in High School or something …… anyway!

Garbz, god luck to you and I hope that you do really well, rep the UK!

  91. badboy:

    Brandon just a lil boy..a anr tryin b a superstar….ummmm
anyway ryan ur music is cool but u aint done anything major yet.
where u can dismiss other pps music.

    All the best garbz!

  92. D. Burton:

Well……… I hate to say it to all of the people who responded unfavorably to the video….But Ryan was and is right…..rather he showed my boy Garbz in a neggative light or not…..Listen…and try to understand, this buisness does not care about if your feelings get hurt, or whats fare…It is run by what I call the bottom line factor….and what Ryan told Garbz is the bottom line…Does his music stand up to a scott storch, or a dr. dre (never mind my grammatical errors)????? Well you have to look at two things…production and the hit factor….the Hit factor is subjective……..But the production factor is not, if any of you have been in the buisness for some time and have reached a certain level of meeting and working with quality hit makers and artist, you can clearly see the difference between a Scott Storch production and the producer down the street on E. 14th and MLK…..And as an A & R person or record exec. etc. you are looking for the best shit to generate money for you and your artist…So if I am an A & R person and I get a hundred Demos a day from new producers yo shit better be HOT…because Dr. Dre sent me a beat also and I can guarantee you his shit is FIRE….And I will go with him every time….Your stuff has to be close to that production factor….not exactly…but close…. I’m tellling you the truth….and if you cannot accept this I dont think that you are ready for this buisness….I felt the same way that many of you felt at one point….But then I realized that your success depends on YOU….So if Garbz does not make it…it is Garbz fault not Ryans….much love to all of you…..Never give up on your dream, your passion, your intention….

    “D. Burton”

  93. LOVE:

Are you all looking for writers as well or just producers? Please get back at me and let me know. Peace.

Fact: Ryan aint no major producer! Cassie Flooped, Not even on the billboard chat of 100.

  97. Nick Bain:

Hey, i think you kept it real with dude in the video, although, I don’t think those laptop speakers could’ve done any producers tracks the full justice. But hey… there’s a certain pedigree of music that you produce and will put your name on, so what you said was real business. I think NEXTSELECTION is definitely the wave of the future.

  98. RUDEY:

Somebody said cassie flopped( and not flooped as they put it):
Billboard Chart (and not chat as they put it)
Me & U peaked at 3 and the lp peaked at 4. Huge success outside the american market in europe and asia .

A humongous following particularly “me & u” in the UK ( top 10) and Germany (top 10). If you’re gonna talk .. at least talk fact .l PLEASE STOP THE HATE ..

criticsm needs factual information. otherwise it’s just hate

    rudey the dj

  99. babyj:

rudey i read what ur saying its true the single did well..but single isnt what measure sucess. Its Album sales. And cassie hasnt done well. Not hate. fact.

  100. SoNiQ:

What are the most important criterias on self-evaluating our production? I think this clip gives constructive criticism and hopefully this guy learned something! Artists in general are constantly looking for positive feedbacks from each other and what’s better than having a critic from someone in the business…whether good or bad!!The challenge is to be able to make sum’ nice out of it and progress. Now…not everyone has the chance of having the proper equipment but have the talent and the will to succeed..it’s amazing what i could do with just the FL Studio 6 on my momma’s computer..I know it and my folks believe in me but there’s the self-evaluation factor that’s still often miscalculated! I love music..especially MY music..thank God for that and whenever i start making real money off of it, then i’ll make sure i can compete with the high-rollers!

Hello, Mr. Ryan Leslie. Question. Have you been in a situation where YOU were the talent and you were just a contact away from that “Mentor” hearing your REAL music? That is the current situation as it seems. Truly you are looking for SUCCESS. Clearly we have it. Its just a matter of reaction. A cool man once said…”A lifestyle Is A Terrible Thing To Waiste!
