Teenage Talk
Going through my archives, I came across this footage of a speech I delivered at my father’s Rotary Club in my early teens, just a few months before I enrolled at Harvard:
Funny how this blog is a variation on the same simple theme: “Do what you believe in, and believe in what you do.” Today, against all odds - I maintain this video journal to create my own distribution channel when others (radio & television) have been slow to recognize and support my artistic vision. In so doing, I have created a direct line with all of you and I am grateful that you have responded. God bless.

Dang Ryan, you trying to bring back the days of those BIG glasses? That’s tight! is that a soldier uni or officer uni that your dad was wearing?
Thursday, April 20th, 2006 at 2:38 am
Impressed. Inspired. Not just by the simple speech you gave when you were this young man, but how your life is a testimony to being yourself. Harvard might have wanted you, but you knew that you didn’t need Harvard. Having that kind of confidence in yourself, in your dreams is what made me comment: Thank you. People like you are the kind of role models we need in society today; striving to be the best at everything you do—education, producing, living everyday life.

Ryan - I really wanted to applaud what you are doing and taking the intiative to bolster you career by reaching a relatively untapped market of the internet. As I mentioned via email, the “Hot2Nite” song you did for New Edition was HOT…that beat is ridiculous…personally I would have kept it and used it, but business is business. I would re-release that joint cuz they slept on it. Anyways, I was in San Diego and I hard the Cassie joint on the radio…so man your efforts are paying off…I wish you the best and whenever I am in the NY, I will give you a holla.

Ryan…I dont know what words to say that havent already been said. Your life is truly been blessed and you show that 10 times over. I have been silently watching the developements of Next Selection these past few months and you have genuinely touched people with the power of your voice. What this video blog shows most of all is that when most of us were watching Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego, Power Rangers and James Bond Jr (lol) you were even then touching people with the power of your voice.
You got a purpose driven life and I cant wait to see or HEAR what happens next.
Liss.

It is at this moment that the cliche becomes a reality. “There’s a reason for everything.”
I heard Cassie on the radio. I looked her up on Myspace. Her blog said to add you. I ended up here and see this very video.
You are the inspiration I’ve been looking for the past 7 months. I’m about to graduate from the University of California, Irvine. I have forgone the immediate enrollment into grad school and have passed on a job offered to me — all to pursue my dream of singing.
I am thankful to you for allowing me this resource. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mr. Ryan.
Friday, April 21st, 2006 at 1:28 am
I don’t believe that it was an accident that I so happened to run into your myspace. I enjoy reading and watching your blogs, the way you handle life and situations interests me and I’m encouraged in some ways. As a Christian, I believe God has called you to reach others and I think it’s bigger and more to it than what you know. I’m praying that you will discover God’s perfect will for your life. He has a plan for you and He loves you!I’m praying for ya!

Hey, RLES Man that was great!
In response to[when others (radio & television) have been slow to recognize and support my artistic vision. ]
I just think you’ve been blessed to have good parents first of all and also inner drive to do what you have been doing for a long time, it just takes time and I think once the world hears your voice time and time again, that will all begin to change. You will get your message across whether it is here at my space or in the Times… Keep doing your thing because it obvious you believe in NS4life whether no one else does and that’s all that matters!
Ummm, I think we had the same glasses from back in the day…..

I have worked with someone you may know, by the name of Mac Peretti, he is a producer from the Netherlands, I believe you did a show or something with him and Richmen INC, his label. Anyways, just droppin by to show some love, and I hope to have the success you have. I will take those 4 D’s to heart, trust. Alright, well i’m out, check my songs, and some of my beats at:

I think your delivery of the speech is more powerful than the speech itself. You were recycling concepts that have been circulated in countless texts and have been reused numerous times in various ways from the ultra right to the ultra left. Yes, you’ve said that you went to Harvard at a young age but names mean nothing– I’m more interested in your works. Perhaps human rights awareness or the decaying literary programs in America’s schools. Yes, you are presenting this wonderful lifestyle but how accessable is it to inner city youth, foreigners, and women who have no desire to sing half naked next to a “rapper?” With your growing popularity let us not forget that we share the same sky with those that hide in the darkness for safety around the globe.
Remember, intellect is bigger than any diamond.

So you were enrolled in Harvard at age fifteen? That’s incredible! What a astonishing achievement. I gotta respect that. When I was fifteen years old, all I ever though about in life was those two female seniors in my Algebra class haha.

Hi Ryan,
I wanted to post a comment unrelated to this blog. (The video blog is very impressive by the way) The real reason I’m hitting you up is because I think I saw you on Weds April 26 walking in Harlem. It could’ve been a look alike lol. It was on 134th and Lenox, Was it you? I would’ve stopped but I was driving back home. I live in Long Island but I go there to get my hair done

I agree with that message and I don’t really see the point of being pestismistic *sorry for my spelling but if you don’t believe in yourself nothing will ever be accomplished and when i finally realized that i must always maintain a positive attitude then my whole outlook on life pretty much changed because with a negative outlook nothing will ever be achieved and i’ll just be swallowed up with self pity!! well thanks and you are a damn inspiration to everyone

Hi Ryan,
Very inspirational blog post. I really learnt alot from this. Do you have any more updates coming soon?
P.S. I came across a few sites that might be useful to you guys:
1. www.socialmofo.com - It’s a photo blogging site. Might be good for your concert photos. You can tag different parts of the photo by drawing on your photos.
2. www.yousendit.com - If you want to save any files online for us to download, such as billboard chart lists, song lyrics, etc.

Why is it that you yourself have quite a vocabulary and can speak fairly eloquently, while the majority of the people that visit this site simply do not?

Wow…I’m inspired. It’s a lot of people who talk because they have to say something and then there are those people who talk because they have something to say. You said a whole mouthful.
As a producer, I’ve set some high standards and in 2003 I made up in my mind that I would do what I believe in and believe in what I do. Since then, it’s been tough but I have no regrets. Anyways, I love what you are doing and I hope to one day be able to work with you. I will definitely be submitting some stuff.
Oh yeah, I had no idea you wrote and produced on that Virtue album. “Jesus Paid The Ransom” is my favorite track on the whole album. I was a fan before I even knew who you were!

I came across your speech and you inspire hope with your words. You speak with vision and belief that seems to be lacking in many people. I really wish your company and artists the greatest success. I’m not a musician but I plan doing something in entertainment and you’ve certainly bolstered an already massive thirst for success.

why anything new won’t come online?
Sunday, May 21st, 2006 at 5:45 pm
I was just hanging around on you tube broadcast and i’ve been watching the videofootage of a little nerd wit such a unsizeable will in his speech that i was just puzzled and glad. I’m french and not black and i come from a crappy place wit a crappy situation but i’m now studying in Uk and gonna soon get down in LA and your motivation helped me recalling that you have to do what you re believing in no matter what…as a future crasher and dancer in La may my path join your’s one day!I dont know you but just keep doing it dude for that is why you are here for!All the best Damien.

Ah the memories of an over-achiever. Yes we were big dorks back in the day but in the end it all paid off =). When were you in school in beantown? My hubby was in Leverett and I was a Wellesley gal. We’re going back this fall as he’s going to attend HBS. Our first date was at the local jazz bar in central square.
I ended up on this site looking for Cassie’s single and got a flash back to my HS days. Keep up the good work and please keep pushing artist to come out with great tunes. Without good creative expression life can be pretty darn boring.

where are the updates ?
did the site move somewhere else ?!
Thursday, May 25th, 2006 at 8:18 pm
No, Chris, has not moved. Ryan just doesn’t care about this, us, the blog and so on, anymore. I guess in the end cockiness got him. Too good to respond.
Friday, May 26th, 2006 at 12:21 am
Big upps on what you’re doing.
We’re Bedtime for Toys the R&B/punk/electro/dance band, from Los Angeles. Sometimes we’ve even been described as a rocked out version of Neptunes meets a hip-hop version No Doubt and I thought we should get in touch!
You, and the Next Selection crew have recently been a big inspiration of ours and we’d love to find a way we could work together in the future . Like you, we are always looking to work with young and driven individuals that are on their way to changing the game. Holla!
Friday, May 26th, 2006 at 1:14 am
Yo what up Ryan. I jus wanted to say i can’t believe how immature some of the people are that leave comments on your YouTube videos… Probably all jealous cuz they haven’t made anything of themselves… its sad that everyone feels the need to badmouth someone just cuz of a video they posted. anyways, best of luck to you!
Friday, May 26th, 2006 at 4:16 am
No offense Ryan, but you were a geek, haha! But really though, I had no idea that you went to Harvard. Did you graduate? It makes you soo much more attractive (as if you weren’t before) that you’re a smart, educated black man (you’re black right? lol, you look a little mixed like Cassie). No wonder you’re at the top! Hey, did you know that PDiddy is claiming that he discovered Cassie? I thought it was you… well he’s getting ALL the credit on Chicago radio stations (I live in Chicago, so…) I just think that’s weird, but hey, if it’s cool wit chu, it’s cool wit me.
Saturday, May 27th, 2006 at 2:50 pm
Good speech. Congratulations on the success of Cassie’s single! Keep on rising.

That’s true about what you can become. It doesn’t matter what race you are or the amount of money you have. Look at all the stars. They didn’t get there with lots of money, they got there with dedication. And i got one more thing to say, that was a very inspirational speech man.
Monday, July 24th, 2006 at 3:04 pm
Yeah my bad, I forgot to tell you that I am not a girl if that’s what you were thinking.lol Because that’s what they all think.
Monday, July 31st, 2006 at 12:50 pm

Mr. Ryan Leslie, I hope you truly read this post??? will i have been following your movement since i frist was taken by Cassie’s “Me and U” single, Well i was kinda hope’n i could get 30 sec of your ear to hear my work, it might be a whole lot to you but it would mean a life time of security in choosing my heart and passion for a career as an artist. currently i am a developing artist, i sing, write, play guitar, some piano, and i produce my own tracks. i also produce another sing who’s talent is extremly rare. i want to to big things and im lost in my mind, if you can accomidate 30 seconds it would change my life. you can find me here (http://www.myspace.com/maddsol) and http://www.myspace.com/maddsoll and my email is amor60643@yahoo.com

The media in america is stupid…they dont focus on the right things…this guy went to Harvard and still followed his dreams instead of going to work on wall street…This is the kind of motivation and inspiration we need in today’s world…God bless you bro

I just wanted to say firt congrats on your success - what I’m sure will be the tip of the iceberg for you. And secondly - I really appreciate how clearyou’re making it the time and effort and education you’ve put into getting where you are. It’s inspiring to see you say that it’s oth tireless work and education that have contributed to your success as well as your god given talent. so many young people think they can just show up and be intant stars and successes - and while that is a one in a million possibility, you’re showing what tireless dedication, willingness to risk everything, and a lot of time spent prepraing and learning can do. Thanks for showing the whole road and not just the destination.
